About SORTEE Code Club

Our Mission

SORTEE Code Club runs free, community-led coding sessions for researchers in ecology and evolutionary biology. We aim to:

  1. Lower the barrier to reproducible research practices
  2. Build community across institutions and career stages
  3. Share knowledge openly — all materials are CC-licensed
  4. Support SORTEE’s mission of more open, reliable, transparent research

How Sessions Work

We meet online every third Tuesday of the month. We host two types of sessions:

  • Training Sessions: Learn new coding skills, packages, models, and tools that support open science.
  • Hacky Hours: Casual peer-to-peer sessions for code review, troubleshooting, and sharing tips and tricks.

TipFirst time? Here’s what to expect

Sessions are informal and collaborative. There’s no such thing as a silly question. The presenter shares their screen, you follow along, and we all learn together.

Time What happens
0:00 Welcome, housekeeping (5 min)
0:05 Main tutorial / demo (40 min)
0:45 Open Q&A + troubleshooting (10 min)
0:55 Wrap up, next session preview (5 min)

Sessions are held on Zoom. Links are distributed via Slack one week and again one hour before the session.
